Bio

I entered the game development world in 2002 by starting Intrinsic Algorithm with my wife, Laurie. We originally started as an independent game studio working on our own titles. Since 2009, however, I do consulting on AI, game design, and mathematical modeling for clients ranging from small indie game studios, to medium-sized studios such as John Smedley's Pixelmage Games, to AAA companies including EA, Sony Online Entertainment, and ArenaNet.

I am the author of the book "Behavioral Mathematics for Game AI" and am a contributor to the "AI Game Programming Wisdom", "Game Programming Gems", and "Game AI Pro" book series. I have also spoken at numerous game conferences and universities around the world on the subjects of AI, game theory, and psychology of games.

I was a founding member of the AI Game Programmers Guild and was the founder of and, for 10 years, co-advisor for the annual AI Summits at GDC.

Yes, I was the guy who almost got killed by the car at the end of GDC 2018. I spent over a year recovering from a shattered pelvis, multiple traumatic brain injuries, a messed up knee, and other such lovely things -- some of which are permanent.

I have architected and shipped my Infinite Axis Utility System and my Modular Scalable Influence Map system for many clients over the past 10 years with excellent performance and great reception by engineers and designers alike. The combination of Utility AI and the Imap system create robust, emergent, data-driven behaviors. I have versions in both C++ and C# that can be installed immediately, hooked up to existing engines in days, and cranking out intelligent behaviors in a week.

I continue to further my education by attending the University of Life. I have no plans to graduate any time soon. (Of course, I could get hit by a car again and that would possibly remove me from the University of Life.)

Specialties: Game AI design and programming specializing in behavioral and simulation modeling.
