AI Developer Portal Experience Engineer

About the role

Developer portals are where API adoption lives or dies. Ours has documentation, code examples, a playground, and usage dashboards — but developers still file 200 support tickets per month asking questions answered in the docs. The docs exist; people can't find what they need. We want to fix that with an AI-powered developer experience layer. You'll build three features: a semantic search over our documentation that returns precise code snippets rather than page links, an interactive troubleshooting assistant that diagnoses common integration issues from error messages, and a personalized onboarding flow that adapts to the developer's programming language and use case. Each feature gets measured by its impact on support ticket volume. This is a 5-month freelance engagement, 25-30 hours per week. The API documentation and portal framework already exist — you're adding the intelligence layer on top. Our developer advocate will provide feedback on what developers actually struggle with.

Responsibilities

  • Build semantic search returning precise code snippets from documentation
  • Create an interactive troubleshooting assistant for common integration issues
  • Design personalized onboarding flows adapting to developer context
  • Measure feature impact on support ticket volume and developer satisfaction
  • Integrate AI features into the existing developer portal framework
  • Iterate based on developer advocate feedback on pain points

Requirements

  • 3+ years building developer tools or documentation systems
  • Experience with LLM-powered search and retrieval applications
  • Strong Python and API design skills
  • Understanding of developer experience and API integration challenges
  • Ability to work independently within a defined product scope
