About the role

Idioms are where language learners get humbled. 'Break a leg,' 'bite the bullet,' 'it's raining cats and dogs' — a learner who translates these literally arrives at nonsense. Recognizing idioms in natural speech, understanding them in context, and eventually using them appropriately is one of the clearest markers of advanced language fluency. Most language learning apps don't address idioms systematically. Our platform teaches 28 language pairs to 4.2 million learners. Idiomatic expression recognition and teaching is one of the biggest gaps in our advanced learner curriculum. You'll build the NLP system that identifies idiomatic expressions in target language content, classifies them by frequency and learning priority, and generates contextualized exercises that teach idiom recognition and usage. The technical challenge is multi-faceted: idiom detection requires distinguishing literal from idiomatic use of the same phrase ('he kicked the bucket' meaning died vs. an actual bucket being kicked), idiom databases are incomplete and language-specific, and the pedagogical sequencing of idiom learning requires understanding which idioms are most frequent in authentic use for a given domain.

Responsibilities

  • Build idiom detection models distinguishing literal from idiomatic use of target phrases in context
  • Develop idiom database construction and coverage assessment across 28 language pairs
  • Implement idiom frequency analysis in authentic corpora for pedagogical sequencing
  • Create contextualized exercise generation for idiom recognition and appropriate usage
  • Build idiom mastery tracking monitoring learner recognition and production accuracy
  • Develop cross-lingual idiom mapping identifying equivalent expressions across language pairs

Requirements

  • 3+ years in NLP engineering with multilingual processing or educational technology experience
  • Strong Python and PyTorch skills with sequence labeling or phrase detection model experience
  • Understanding of idiom linguistics, figurative language detection, and language learning pedagogy
  • Experience with multilingual NLP corpora and cross-lingual model development
  • Ability to collaborate with language specialists on linguistic edge cases and coverage assessment
