AI Intellectual Property Claim Analysis Developer

Jaxon Martins

Full-time · Job · New_York

About the role

Patent claims are the legally operative portion of a patent: the numbered sentences that define exactly what is owned and what constitutes infringement. Reading claims requires understanding both the legal scope conventions and the technical domain — a claim that recites 'a computing device comprising a processor configured to...' is simultaneously a legal construct and a technical specification. Patent litigation, freedom-to-operate analysis, and patent prosecution each require systematic claim analysis at a scale that manual attorney review cannot efficiently support. We provide legal AI capabilities to 28 law firms and corporate legal departments. IP claim analysis is a growth area: the volume of AI-related patent filings has grown 40% in the past two years, and our clients' patent prosecution and litigation practices are dealing with dramatically increased analysis workloads. AI-assisted claim scope analysis, dependent claim tree visualization, and claim differentiation from prior art are the capabilities they're asking for. You'll build the IP claim analysis system: claim parsing and structure extraction from patent text, claim scope mapping that identifies the bounds of independent claims and how dependent claims narrow them, and claim comparison analysis that identifies where two patents' claims overlap or diverge in legally relevant ways.

Responsibilities

  • Build patent claim parsing and structure extraction identifying claim elements, limitations, and their relationships
  • Implement claim scope mapping for independent claims showing broadest reasonable interpretation
  • Develop dependent claim tree visualization showing how claim chains narrow from independent claim bases
  • Create claim comparison analysis identifying scope overlap and differentiation between patents
  • Build claim differentiation from prior art identifying elements that distinguish claims from cited references
  • Validate claim analysis accuracy through attorney review assessment against manual analysis benchmarks

Requirements

  • 6+ years in NLP engineering with legal document processing, patent informatics, or IP analytics experience
  • Understanding of patent claim structure, claim construction principles, and IP litigation context
  • Strong Python and transformer model skills for legal text parsing and span extraction
  • Experience building structured extraction systems that meet professional legal use case precision requirements
  • Ability to collaborate with patent attorneys on claim construction standards and analysis validation

Benefits

  • Fully remote with flexible schedule
  • Comprehensive health benefits
  • $4,000 annual professional development budget
  • Equity participation
  • Bonus tied to client IP practice growth
