AI Plugin Marketplace Backend Developer

About the role

Our ML platform has 3,200 active users who build and deploy models. They keep asking for the same things: a custom data connector, a specific preprocessing step, a niche evaluation metric. Building each one internally doesn't scale. A plugin marketplace does — third-party developers build what users need, we provide the sandbox and distribution. You'll build the marketplace backend: the plugin submission pipeline, the sandboxed execution environment that runs untrusted code safely, the dependency resolution system, version management, and the API that platform users call to install and invoke plugins. Security is non-negotiable — a malicious plugin must not be able to access another user's data or escape the sandbox. The platform team is seven engineers. You'll own the marketplace backend while others handle the plugin SDK and the frontend store. The architecture is defined; the implementation is yours. First milestone: 10 internal plugins running in production sandbox within 8 weeks.

Responsibilities

  • Build the plugin submission, review, and publishing pipeline
  • Design sandboxed execution environments for untrusted plugin code
  • Implement dependency resolution and version management
  • Create the API surface for plugin installation and invocation
  • Ensure security isolation between plugins and user data
  • Support third-party developers with documentation and debugging tools

Requirements

  • 3+ years in backend engineering with platform or marketplace experience
  • Strong security awareness for sandboxing and isolation patterns
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and container security
  • Proficiency in Python and API design with FastAPI or similar
  • Understanding of dependency management and versioning strategies
