AI 3D PCB Inspection Engineer

Olivia Wang

Full-time · Job · Los_Angeles

About the role

Printed circuit board defects — solder bridges, lifted pads, misaligned components — are invisible to traditional 2D automated optical inspection at the precision levels modern electronics demand. 3D structured-light imaging reveals depth information that 2D cameras miss, but analyzing 3D point clouds and depth maps with the accuracy and throughput that PCB manufacturing lines require is a computer vision problem that has not been fully solved. We build AI-powered inspection systems for electronics manufacturers. Our 2D inspection is production-grade; our 3D inspection pipeline is in late development and targeting deployment in two automotive electronics plants. You'll improve the 3D defect detection models, develop the anomaly scoring that distinguishes manufacturing defects from acceptable variation, and optimize for throughput — we need to inspect 600 boards per hour per camera station. This role is hybrid: 2 days per week in our San Diego lab for hardware testing, 3 days remote.

Responsibilities

  • Improve 3D defect detection models for solder and component placement defects
  • Develop anomaly scoring that tolerates acceptable manufacturing variation
  • Optimize inference throughput to meet 600 boards per hour per station requirement
  • Build defect classification models distinguishing defect types from depth maps
  • Design data collection protocols for rare defect type augmentation
  • Validate models against automotive electronics quality standards

Requirements

  • 3+ years in computer vision engineering with 3D imaging or manufacturing inspection experience
  • Experience with point cloud processing, depth map analysis, or structured-light imaging
  • Strong PyTorch skills and familiarity with 3D convolution or PointNet architectures
  • Understanding of manufacturing quality requirements and defect taxonomy
  • Ability to do hardware-in-the-loop testing in a lab environment

Benefits

  • Hybrid — 2 days San Diego lab, 3 days remote
  • Health, dental, and vision
  • $3,000 annual learning budget
  • Patent bonus program
  • Relocation support available
