About the role

Every student learns differently, but most educational software treats them the same — linear progressions through fixed content regardless of what each student already knows. Our adaptive learning platform adjusts difficulty, content selection, and practice timing based on individual performance patterns, creating personalized learning paths that accelerate mastery. This 10-month contract focuses on the adaptation engine: knowledge state estimation from student response patterns, optimal content sequencing that maximizes learning efficiency, spaced repetition scheduling calibrated to individual forgetting curves, and the difficulty calibration system that keeps students in their zone of proximal development. Adaptive learning is Bayesian inference applied to education. You'll estimate what a student knows from noisy signals (correct answers could be guesses, wrong answers could be careless errors), then make content decisions that maximize information gain about the student's knowledge state.

Responsibilities

  • Build knowledge state estimation models from student response patterns
  • Design optimal content sequencing algorithms maximizing learning efficiency
  • Calibrate spaced repetition scheduling to individual forgetting curves
  • Develop difficulty adaptation keeping students in productive learning zones
  • Validate adaptation effectiveness through controlled learning outcome studies

Requirements

  • 3+ years in educational technology, learning science, or adaptive systems
  • Strong Python and scikit-learn skills for Bayesian modeling
  • Understanding of item response theory and knowledge tracing
  • Statistical expertise for learning outcome measurement
  • Interest in educational psychology and personalized learning
