AI Alt-Text Generation Engineer

About the role

Millions of images on the web still have no description at all, which makes them invisible to blind and low-vision users. Vordex Tech builds accessibility tooling for publishers and e-commerce sites, and our alt-text generator is the feature customers ask about most. The current version describes what is in the image but not why it matters on the page. We want a freelancer to fine-tune a vision-language model that uses surrounding page context, and to evaluate it with our panel of screen reader users. Scope is about 20 hours per week for three months.

Responsibilities

  • Fine-tune a vision-language model to produce context-aware alt text
  • Build an evaluation protocol together with our screen reader user panel
  • Package the model behind a FastAPI endpoint our product can call
  • Write a short report on failure cases and recommended next steps

Requirements

  • Experience fine-tuning vision-language or image captioning models
  • Comfortable with PyTorch and the Hugging Face ecosystem
  • Genuine interest in accessibility and WCAG guidelines
  • Can work independently and report progress weekly
