About the role

Our mission is to make local government legible to the people it serves. Right now, ballot initiatives are written in dense legal language that most voters never fully read before they vote. This role exists to close that gap. You'll build a retrieval and summarization pipeline that turns lengthy ballot initiative text into plain-language, neutral summaries of what the measure actually does, who it affects, and what a yes or no vote means in practice. Neutrality and factual grounding matter more than fluency here, so you'll spend real time on evaluation, not just generation. This is a contract engagement tied to election cycles, ideal if you want meaningful civic-tech scope without a long-term commitment.

Responsibilities

  • Build a RAG pipeline that grounds summaries in the original ballot initiative text
  • Write and evaluate prompts for neutral, plain-language summarization
  • Build a lightweight fact-checking pass to catch generation errors
  • Coordinate with the civic content team on tone and accessibility

Requirements

  • Some experience with retrieval-augmented generation or summarization pipelines
  • Careful, detail-oriented approach to factual accuracy
  • Comfortable working independently on a contract basis
  • Interest in civic technology
