AI Churn Prediction Feature Engineer

About the role

Predicting which customers will churn next month is only useful if you catch them early enough to do something about it. Our churn models need to detect early warning signals — changes in usage patterns, support ticket sentiment shifts, billing friction events — weeks before the customer actually decides to leave. As a junior feature engineer, you'll build the features that make early detection possible. That means writing SQL queries to extract behavioral signals from product analytics data, computing rolling aggregates that capture trend changes, and designing lag features that give the model time-aware context. Each feature you build gets evaluated on how much it improves the model's ability to predict churn 30-60 days in advance versus 0-7 days. The data science team is four people. You'll work directly with the senior data scientist who builds the churn models, providing the features that feed them. It's a great way to learn applied ML through the lens of a real business problem with measurable outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Build behavioral features from product analytics and usage data
  • Design rolling aggregates and trend features capturing usage changes
  • Create lag features providing time-aware context for prediction
  • Evaluate feature importance and contribution to early detection
  • Write feature documentation and data lineage records
  • Support ad-hoc feature requests from the modeling team

Requirements

  • 1+ year working with SQL and Python for data analysis
  • Understanding of basic statistics: distributions, aggregations, correlations
  • Familiarity with pandas for feature computation
  • Ability to think critically about what signals predict behavior
  • Interest in SaaS metrics and customer analytics
