About the role

Academic citations form a network that reveals how ideas spread, which papers are foundational vs. incremental, and where research frontiers are emerging. Our platform analyzes citation networks across 50 million papers to help research teams identify the most important work in any field — not by citation count alone, but by network position, citation context, and temporal dynamics. This 9-month contract focuses on the network analysis layer: building algorithms that identify influential papers based on their position in the citation graph, classifying citation types (foundational reference vs. methodological borrowing vs. critical disagreement), and detecting emerging research clusters where citation density is increasing rapidly. Citation analysis is graph ML applied to the sociology of science. A paper cited by 100 incremental follow-ups is less important than one cited by 10 paradigm-shifting works. You'll build the network features that capture these distinctions and validate them against domain expert assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Build citation influence algorithms based on network position and graph features
  • Classify citation types distinguishing foundational from incremental references
  • Detect emerging research clusters from increasing citation density patterns
  • Validate influence metrics against domain expert assessments
  • Create research landscape visualizations for institutional research strategy teams

Requirements

  • 3+ years in network analysis, graph ML, or bibliometrics
  • Strong Python and scikit-learn skills for graph feature engineering
  • SQL proficiency for querying large citation databases
  • Statistical skills for metric validation and significance testing
  • Interest in research evaluation and science of science
