AI Clause Extraction Model Developer

About the role

Legal contracts contain thousands of clauses, and finding the ones that matter — indemnification caps, termination triggers, change of control provisions — requires lawyers who bill $500 per hour to read every page. Our extraction system identifies, classifies, and summarizes relevant clauses across 40 clause types in 8 seconds per document. The current model handles standard commercial contracts well (92% F1) but drops to 74% on complex financial instruments — credit agreements, indentures, and swap confirmations — where clause boundaries are ambiguous and nested conditions span multiple pages. You'll push accuracy on these complex document types while maintaining speed and adding support for new clause types as our legal team defines them. The legal NLP team is five engineers. You'll be the most senior model developer, responsible for architecture decisions, training data strategy, and the evaluation framework that our legal consultants use to validate model output.

Responsibilities

  • Improve clause extraction accuracy on complex financial instruments
  • Design model architectures that handle multi-page clause boundaries
  • Build the evaluation framework validated by legal domain experts
  • Develop training data strategies for new clause type expansion
  • Optimize extraction speed for real-time contract review workflows
  • Set technical direction for the legal NLP model development team

Requirements

  • 6+ years in NLP with document understanding or information extraction focus
  • Experience with long-document models and hierarchical text classification
  • Strong PyTorch and Hugging Face skills
  • Understanding of legal document structure and terminology
  • Track record of improving extraction metrics on domain-specific tasks
