About the role

A physician note that is missing a diagnosis code, an incomplete medication reconciliation, or a discharge summary that does not mention a complication creates downstream problems: insurance denials, coding errors, quality measure failures, and gaps in continuity of care. Clinical documentation completeness checking catches these issues before they leave the system. We build clinical NLP tools for hospital revenue cycle and quality teams. Our completeness checker analyzes clinical notes in real time, identifies documentation gaps against evidence-based templates, and surfaces actionable suggestions to clinicians before they finalize their documentation. The current system covers 8 clinical note types; you will help expand coverage to 12 more. This is a junior role building on a production clinical NLP system. Your senior teammates — a clinical informaticist and an NLP engineer — will guide you through the domain and review your contributions.

Responsibilities

  • Build completeness rule extraction from clinical documentation templates
  • Implement NLP features that detect documentation gaps in specific note sections
  • Expand coverage from 8 to 12 clinical note types
  • Write evaluation scripts validating completeness detection accuracy
  • Maintain the completeness checker integration with EHR systems
  • Document rule logic for clinical informatics team review

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python development experience
  • Basic NLP skills or interest in learning clinical text processing
  • SQL proficiency for clinical data extraction
  • Attention to detail required in a clinical accuracy context
  • Willingness to learn healthcare documentation standards and FHIR basics
