AI Coastline Change Detection Engineer

Aaron Eriksson

Full-time · Job · London

About the role

Sea level rise and coastal erosion are reshaping shorelines globally, but quantifying these changes requires analyzing decades of satellite imagery — petabytes of data that no human team could review manually. Our coastal monitoring system detects and measures shoreline change at 10-meter resolution across 600,000 km of global coastline, updated monthly from multi-source satellite archives. The technical challenge is change detection through noise. Cloud cover, tidal variation, seasonal vegetation, and sensor differences across satellite generations all create false-positive change signals. You'll build the detection pipeline that filters these confounders and identifies genuine long-term trends: beach erosion rates, delta growth, mangrove coverage change, and infrastructure encroachment. The Earth observation team is five engineers. You'll be the senior ML engineer who drives the change detection methodology, working with marine geographers who validate detections against ground-truth coastal surveys.

Responsibilities

  • Build coastal change detection filtering tidal, seasonal, and sensor noise
  • Measure shoreline position changes at 10-meter resolution from multi-source imagery
  • Detect trend types: erosion, accretion, mangrove change, infrastructure encroachment
  • Handle temporal fusion across decades of imagery from different satellite sensors
  • Validate detection accuracy against ground-truth coastal survey data
  • Optimize processing pipeline for monthly refresh of 600,000 km coverage

Requirements

  • 5+ years in remote sensing or geospatial ML with change detection experience
  • Experience with multi-temporal satellite imagery analysis
  • Strong PyTorch and geospatial data processing skills
  • Understanding of coastal geomorphology concepts
  • Track record of shipping production remote sensing systems

Benefits

  • Fully remote with flexible hours
  • 30 days PTO
  • Private health insurance
  • £4,000 annual conference budget
  • Work that quantifies climate change impacts on global coastlines
