AI Cognitive Load Assessment Developer

About the role

Accessible interfaces aren't just about screen readers and color contrast. Cognitive accessibility matters too — interfaces that overwhelm users with information, require complex multi-step decisions, or use inconsistent navigation patterns create barriers as real as missing alt text. Our cognitive load assessment tool evaluates UI designs and live applications for cognitive accessibility issues. You'll build the assessment models that estimate cognitive load from interface structure: information density per viewport, decision complexity at each interaction point, navigation consistency across pages, and reading level of instructional text. Each assessment produces a scored report with specific remediation suggestions — not just "this is hard" but "this form has 14 fields visible simultaneously; group into 3 steps of 4-5 fields each." This is a 10-month contract. You'll work with our accessibility research team who defines the cognitive load metrics and our UX consultant who validates assessment accuracy against user testing results.

Responsibilities

  • Build cognitive load estimation models from interface structure analysis
  • Assess information density, decision complexity, and navigation consistency
  • Generate scored reports with specific remediation suggestions
  • Validate assessments against real user testing outcomes
  • Design evaluation benchmarks for cognitive accessibility metrics
  • Support integration of assessment into design review workflows

Requirements

  • 3+ years in ML or UX analytics with accessibility or usability focus
  • Understanding of cognitive psychology and information processing concepts
  • Strong Python and statistical analysis skills
  • Experience with UI analysis, DOM parsing, or layout understanding
  • Sensitivity to diverse user needs and inclusive design principles
