AI Contract Amendment Change Detector

Emma Garcia

Full-time · Job · New_York

About the role

A contract amendment is supposed to change specific terms. What it actually changes is often unclear without careful comparison: is this amendment adding an obligation, removing a right, modifying a definition in a way that affects downstream clauses, or extending a term that changes renewal economics? Legal teams reviewing amendments manually spend hours on work that should take minutes. Our contract intelligence platform serves 50 legal operations and procurement teams. Amendment change detection is a highly requested feature: given a master agreement and a subsequent amendment, automatically identify every provision change — what was added, what was deleted, what was modified — and classify the change by type and risk significance. You'll build the amendment comparison system: designing semantic diff models that go beyond text diffing to understand what contractual provisions actually changed and why the change matters, building risk classification for each detected change type, and integrating the change detection output into the contract lifecycle workflow where legal teams action it. The accuracy bar is high — missed changes in contracts have real legal and commercial consequences.

Responsibilities

  • Build semantic contract amendment comparison identifying substantive provision changes beyond text-level differences
  • Implement change type classification: additions, deletions, modifications, definition changes, and scope expansions
  • Develop risk significance scoring prioritizing changes by legal and commercial impact
  • Handle cross-reference tracking detecting when a definition change propagates through dependent clauses
  • Create amendment comparison output integrated into contract lifecycle management workflows
  • Validate detection accuracy against legal team manual review annotations

  • 3+ years in NLP engineering with document understanding or legal tech experience
  • Strong Python and LLM-based text comparison skills
  • Understanding of contract structure, legal document conventions, and amendment mechanics
  • Experience building NLP systems requiring high accuracy for consequential decisions
  • Ability to collaborate with legal operations teams on accuracy requirements and edge cases
