AI Contract Lifecycle Automation Developer

About the role

Contract management is 80% mechanical and 20% judgment. The mechanical parts — clause extraction, obligation tracking, renewal date alerting, counterparty risk screening — shouldn't require a paralegal's time. Our platform automates those mechanics for legal and procurement teams at mid-market companies. The 20% that requires judgment is where the attorney earns their fee. This is an 8-month contract focused on shipping four automation features: AI-powered clause library tagging, obligation extraction with deadline tracking, deviation detection against playbook standards, and automated renewal risk scoring. Each feature has a defined spec and design mockup. We need an engineer who can execute against those specs, build robust backend services, and handle the inevitable edge cases that emerge when real contracts hit the system. You'll work with a product manager and one frontend engineer. The LLM infrastructure — prompt management, rate limiting, fallback logic — is already in place. You're building on top of it, not from scratch. Target: all four features in production by end of month 6.

Responsibilities

  • Build clause extraction and library tagging automation for contract documents
  • Implement obligation identification and deadline tracking pipelines
  • Develop contract deviation detection against pre-defined playbook standards
  • Create renewal risk scoring models from contract terms and expiration patterns
  • Integrate all features into the existing LLM infrastructure and API layer
  • Write thorough test coverage for all contract automation logic

Requirements

  • 5+ years building production NLP or document automation systems
  • Hands-on experience with LangChain, OpenAI API, or similar LLM frameworks
  • Strong FastAPI skills for backend service development
  • Experience with legal document processing is a plus but not required
  • Ability to execute against a defined spec with minimal oversight
