AI Contractual Obligation Tracker Developer

About the role

A Fortune 500 company's legal team manages 4,000 active contracts simultaneously. Buried in those contracts are thousands of obligations: reporting deadlines, notice requirements, milestone payments, audit rights, renewal windows, insurance minimums. Missing any one of them can trigger a breach, a penalty, or a lost renewal. The legal team's current system is a spreadsheet that's perpetually six months out of date. We're building the obligation extraction and tracking system that replaces that spreadsheet. You'll own the extraction layer: building NLP models that identify obligations from contract text, normalize them into structured records (party, obligation type, deadline, trigger condition, consequence of breach), and link them to the right clause for human verification. The hard part is the long tail: unusual obligation types, cross-references between contract sections, and obligations that are conditional on events outside the contract itself. This is a senior IC role at the intersection of legal NLP and product engineering. You'll work directly with two former contract attorneys on our team who will challenge your extraction quality on real enterprise contracts. The standard is not 'good enough' — it's contractually defensible.

Responsibilities

  • Build obligation extraction models identifying commitments from contract text
  • Design structured obligation schema covering party, type, deadline, trigger, and consequence
  • Handle cross-reference resolution for obligations that span multiple contract sections
  • Implement conditional obligation parsing for events that trigger future obligations
  • Create the review workflow that routes low-confidence extractions to legal team
  • Build obligation monitoring with deadline alerting and status tracking

Requirements

  • 5+ years building production NLP or document automation systems
  • Experience with legal document processing or contract analysis
  • Strong LangChain/OpenAI API skills with production LLM system deployment experience
  • Ability to design extraction schemas from domain knowledge in collaboration with experts
  • Understanding of precision-recall trade-offs when errors have legal consequences
