About the role

Search boxes are dying. Users want to ask questions, have conversations, and get answers that synthesize across multiple documents — not just a ranked list of URLs they have to click through themselves. Our enterprise search platform is transitioning from keyword retrieval to conversational AI, and we're 60% of the way there. The technical stack works: we have vector retrieval, re-ranking, and a generation layer built on our document corpus. What we need now is the conversation layer — maintaining context across turns, understanding when a follow-up question refers to a previous result, handling contradictions between retrieved documents, and generating responses that cite sources accurately without hallucinating. You'll build the conversation state management system and the multi-turn query reformulation logic that makes our search feel like a knowledgeable colleague rather than a search engine. The platform serves 180 enterprise clients in legal, financial services, and healthcare — domains where source attribution and factual accuracy are non-negotiable.

Responsibilities

  • Build conversation state management for multi-turn enterprise search sessions
  • Implement query reformulation that leverages conversation history and context
  • Design contradiction detection when retrieved documents disagree
  • Build source attribution that survives multi-document synthesis
  • Create evaluation benchmarks for conversational search quality
  • Collaborate with enterprise clients on domain-specific quality requirements

Requirements

  • 3+ years building NLP or conversational AI systems
  • Experience with RAG architectures and multi-turn dialogue management
  • Familiarity with LangChain, LlamaIndex, or similar orchestration frameworks
  • Strong Python and API development skills
  • Understanding of precision-accuracy trade-offs in enterprise search contexts
