About the role

Our mission is to make civic data reliable enough that the public officials and journalists who use it can actually trust it. Right now our open data pipelines ingest budget, procurement, and permitting records from dozens of counties, each publishing in a different spreadsheet layout, date format, or field naming convention. This role focuses on building the normalization layer that maps every county's quirks onto one consistent internal schema before the data reaches our public-facing tools. It's part-time, flexible, and ideal for someone who cares about civic tech but doesn't need a full-time commitment right now.

Responsibilities

  • Map inconsistent county-level formats onto a shared internal schema
  • Build normalization rules for dates, identifiers, and field naming
  • Document known format quirks for each county source
  • Work with ETL pipelines to standardize incoming public records data
  • Flag county sources whose format changes without notice

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience with data normalization or ETL work
  • Strong SQL and Python skills
  • Comfortable working with messy, inconsistently formatted public data
  • Interest in civic tech or public sector data
  • Able to commit 20 hours per week
