AI Curriculum Personalization Engineer

About the role

Every student learns differently, but most edtech platforms serve the same content in the same order to everyone. Our adaptive learning system changes that — it observes how a student interacts with each lesson, predicts where they'll struggle next, and adjusts the curriculum path in real time. We serve 120,000 students across K-12 and university partners. The personalization engine is the core of what we sell. It combines knowledge tracing models (what does this student know right now?), prerequisite graphs (what must they learn before topic X?), and engagement predictors (will they disengage if we assign another problem set?). Your job is to improve all three components and build the orchestration layer that turns their outputs into a personalized lesson plan. You'll work with our learning science team who design the pedagogical rules and our content team who create the learning materials. The engineering team is five people; you'll be the second ML engineer, working alongside a senior who focuses on assessment models.

Responsibilities

  • Improve knowledge tracing models for real-time student skill estimation
  • Build engagement prediction to optimize content sequencing
  • Design orchestration layer that generates personalized lesson plans
  • Run A/B tests to measure learning outcome improvements
  • Collaborate with learning scientists on pedagogical rule integration
  • Monitor personalization quality metrics across student cohorts

Requirements

  • 3+ years in ML engineering with experience in recommendation or personalization
  • Understanding of sequential decision-making or bandit algorithms
  • Strong Python and SQL skills with production deployment experience
  • Interest in education technology and learning science
  • Experience with A/B testing and causal inference is a plus
