AI Data Domain Classification Engineer

About the role

Lyrex Data's platform is used by data governance teams at enterprise companies to manage their data catalog. One of the most persistent pain points: nobody agrees on how to classify data assets into business domains, and the manual tagging process is inconsistent and incomplete. We're solving that with ML. In this role, you'll build the classification models that automatically assign data assets to business domains (Finance, HR, Product, Marketing, etc.) based on schema metadata, column names, sample values, and lineage context. You'll evaluate model accuracy against human-tagged gold sets, build the active learning loop that surfaces uncertain classifications for reviewer correction, and own the retraining pipeline. You'll work in a structured cross-functional squad with data platform engineers and product designers. Clear sprint ownership, fortnightly releases, and direct feedback from clients who use the classification feature are part of the everyday workflow. Mid-level with a 12-month path to senior.

Responsibilities

  • Build multi-class classification models for data asset business domain assignment
  • Develop active learning pipeline that surfaces low-confidence classifications for review
  • Own the retraining pipeline triggered by reviewer corrections
  • Collaborate with data engineers to enrich classification features from lineage metadata
  • Report model accuracy metrics to product team in monthly model review

Requirements

  • 3+ years data science or ML engineering experience
  • Strong Python and SQL skills
  • Experience building text or metadata classification models
  • Familiarity with data catalog or data governance concepts is a plus
  • Experience with Apache Spark for large-scale feature computation
