About the role

You'll be the third person to touch our data platform's cost visibility, working directly with the two engineers who built our Airflow orchestration layer and want cost forecasting bolted on without slowing anything down. Our pipeline costs have grown steadily as new sources come online, and nobody can currently forecast next month's spend with any confidence. You'll build a lightweight forecasting layer that projects pipeline compute costs based on job history and scheduled changes, giving the team an early warning before a surprise bill shows up. This is a part-time freelance engagement, well suited to someone early in their data engineering career who wants real production scope without a full-time commitment.

Responsibilities

  • Build cost forecasting models from historical Airflow job execution data
  • Set up a simple weekly report projecting upcoming pipeline spend
  • Flag jobs with cost trends that deviate from forecast
  • Document the forecasting methodology for the core platform team

Requirements

  • Some hands-on experience with Airflow or similar orchestration tools
  • Working SQL and Python skills
  • Comfortable working independently on a freelance basis
  • Interest in data infrastructure cost management
