About the role

Detecting defects is step one. Understanding why they happen is where the real value lives. A scratch on a lens surface might be caused by contaminated polishing slurry, incorrect machine pressure, or operator handling errors — and each root cause requires a different corrective action. Our root cause analysis platform connects defect patterns to process variables. This 10-month contract focuses on the causal analysis engine: correlating defect occurrence with upstream process parameters, building statistical models that identify the most likely root cause for each defect type, and generating actionable recommendations that manufacturing engineers can implement to prevent recurrence. Manufacturing root cause analysis is causal inference in a noisy, high-dimensional environment. Hundreds of process variables interact. Changes propagate through production stages. Confounders are everywhere. You'll need statistical rigor and manufacturing intuition to separate genuine causal relationships from spurious correlations.

Responsibilities

  • Correlate defect patterns with upstream manufacturing process parameters
  • Build statistical models identifying most likely root causes per defect type
  • Generate actionable corrective action recommendations for manufacturing engineers
  • Separate causal relationships from spurious correlations in noisy process data
  • Validate root cause predictions against engineering interventions and outcomes

Requirements

  • 3+ years in manufacturing analytics or causal inference
  • Strong scikit-learn and Python skills for statistical modeling
  • Experience with manufacturing process data and quality systems
  • SQL and Tableau skills for data exploration and visualization
  • Statistical expertise for causal analysis in observational settings
