About the role

Design systems enforce visual consistency across products — the same button styles, spacing rules, and color tokens everywhere. Our AI design system goes further: it generates new components that match existing design language, suggests layout compositions for new pages, and flags designs that violate system rules before developers implement them. As a freelance design systems engineer, you'll build the generation and validation layers: prompt architectures that encode design system rules, validation pipelines that check generated designs against token libraries and spacing grids, and the feedback system that learns from designer corrections to improve generation quality. Each engagement runs 4-6 weeks, focused on a specific client's design system. You'll analyze their existing components, codify the implicit rules designers follow, and build the AI layer that extends their system while maintaining visual coherence.

Responsibilities

  • Build AI generation layers producing components matching existing design language
  • Design validation pipelines checking generated designs against system rules
  • Codify implicit design rules from existing component libraries
  • Create feedback systems learning from designer corrections
  • Deliver documented design system AI extensions in 4-6 week engagements

Requirements

  • 3+ years in design engineering or design systems development
  • Hands-on experience with AI generation tools and prompt engineering
  • Understanding of design tokens, spacing systems, and component libraries
  • Strong Python skills for validation and pipeline development
  • Portfolio showing design system or design tooling work
