About the role

Design tokens are the atomic values that define a visual system: color palettes, typography scales, spacing units, border radii, shadow definitions. When a company has 8 product teams and 4 years of design system evolution, their token library becomes an archaeology project — some tokens are actively used everywhere, others are referenced in 2 files from 2019, and no one knows which is which. Our design intelligence platform serves 200 product companies, and token management is a persistent pain. We want to add intelligence: given a design system token library, surface which tokens are redundant, which are inconsistently applied, which violate accessibility contrast ratios, and which could be consolidated. The ML component is understanding the semantic relationships between tokens — 'these 6 blue variants are probably all trying to be the same primary action color.' You'll build the token analysis and recommendation engine: parsing design system files, clustering semantically similar tokens, detecting inconsistent application across component libraries, and generating actionable consolidation recommendations. This is a mid-level engineering role with ownership of a new product capability that 200 design teams will use directly.

Responsibilities

  • Build design token parsing and analysis pipeline for Figma variables, CSS custom properties, and JSON token files
  • Implement semantic clustering to identify redundant or near-duplicate token groups
  • Develop inconsistency detection flagging tokens applied differently across component libraries
  • Create accessibility analysis checking color token contrast ratios against WCAG standards
  • Generate consolidation recommendations with estimated impact on component coverage
  • Build APIs serving token intelligence insights to the product dashboard

Requirements

  • 3+ years in software engineering with some exposure to design systems or frontend tooling
  • Strong Python skills with API development experience
  • Familiarity with design token formats, CSS custom properties, or design system conventions
  • Interest in AI-assisted developer and designer tooling
  • Ability to build features from schema design through to API delivery
