AI Discharge Summary Quality Auditor

Alice Rossi

Full-time · Job · New_York

About the role

Hospital discharge summaries are the handoff document between inpatient and outpatient care. A well-written discharge summary gives the patient's PCP everything they need to continue care continuity: the admission diagnosis, what was done, what changed in the medication regimen, pending test results, follow-up instructions, and red flags for readmission. An incomplete or inaccurate discharge summary is a care continuity gap that correlates with preventable readmissions. We serve 28 health systems with clinical NLP capabilities. Discharge summary quality auditing is a new capability our clients need: automatic detection of incomplete discharge summaries before they leave the hospital — missing pending results documentation, medication reconciliation gaps, absent follow-up instructions — so clinicians can complete them before discharge rather than being notified of the gap after the patient is home. You'll build the discharge summary quality audit system: NLP models that extract documented information categories from discharge summaries, completeness checking against clinical quality standards, and risk-stratified alerting that surfaces the highest-risk documentation gaps to the care team. The role is hybrid — 2 days per week in NYC for clinical collaborator engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Build NLP models extracting documented care information categories from discharge summary text
  • Implement completeness checking comparing documented sections against clinical quality standards
  • Develop risk-stratified alerting surfacing highest-risk documentation gaps to care teams before discharge
  • Handle clinical documentation variability across physician writing styles and specialty-specific formats
  • Create quality metrics tracking discharge summary completeness rates across hospital units and physicians
  • Validate model outputs against physician quality review assessments as ground truth

Requirements

  • 6+ years in clinical NLP, healthcare data science, or health informatics engineering
  • Deep understanding of clinical documentation standards and discharge summary requirements
  • Strong Python and LLM-based clinical text processing skills
  • Experience with EHR data, HIPAA requirements, and clinical workflow integration
  • Ability to collaborate with physicians and nursing staff on clinical quality requirements

Benefits

  • Hybrid: 2 days NYC, 3 days remote
  • Comprehensive health benefits
  • $4,000 annual professional development budget
  • Equity participation
  • Work with direct patient care impact
