About the role

Insurance companies process 200,000 claims per month, and each claim involves 8-15 documents: medical records, police reports, repair estimates, policy declarations, and more. Our platform automates the document-heavy parts of claims processing — extraction, classification, validation, and routing — so adjusters spend time on judgment calls rather than data entry. We need an architect to redesign our document workflow engine. The current system handles each document type with a separate pipeline, which means adding support for a new document type takes 3 weeks of engineering effort. The target architecture should let us add a new type in 3 days using configuration instead of code. This is a 10-month contract with a specific deliverable: a workflow engine that's configurable, observable, and reliable enough to pass SOC 2 audit. You'll work with two backend engineers who'll implement your designs and a product manager who owns the client-facing requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Design a configurable document workflow engine for insurance claims processing
  • Define the abstraction layer that makes new document types configuration-driven
  • Specify observability and audit logging requirements for SOC 2 compliance
  • Create technical specifications for the implementation team
  • Review code and guide two backend engineers through the build
  • Validate the architecture against performance and reliability requirements

Requirements

  • 7+ years in backend architecture with workflow or document processing experience
  • Experience designing systems that are configuration-driven rather than code-driven
  • Strong understanding of NLP extraction and classification pipelines
  • Familiarity with compliance requirements: SOC 2, HIPAA, or similar
  • Ability to create clear technical specs and mentor junior engineers
