AI Drought Early Warning Systems Engineer

About the role

We're building the forecasting models that water utilities use to plan a season ahead. Our climate risk platform already predicts extreme heat and storm surge; drought is the gap our customers keep asking us to close, since reservoir planning decisions get made months before a shortage becomes visible. In this role you'll build time-series models that combine soil moisture data, precipitation history, and reservoir telemetry into a rolling drought severity index. You'll work closely with our existing climate modeling team, reusing pipelines they've already built for heat forecasting where it makes sense. The models you ship will directly inform water restriction decisions for municipalities serving several million residents. Utilities using our platform have historically made these calls with spreadsheets and gut instinct — you're replacing that with something they can defend to a public board.

Responsibilities

  • Build time-series models for rolling drought severity scoring
  • Integrate soil moisture, precipitation, and reservoir telemetry into shared feature pipelines
  • Validate forecasts against historical drought events across multiple watersheds
  • Partner with the climate modeling team to reuse existing forecasting infrastructure
  • Present model accuracy and limitations clearly to non-technical utility staff

Requirements

  • Experience with time-series forecasting on environmental or sensor data
  • Comfortable working with pandas and numpy at scale
  • Familiarity with GCP-based data pipelines
  • Able to explain model uncertainty to non-technical stakeholders
