AI Education Platform Developer

About the role

We build AI tutoring tools for university students. Our platform generates practice problems, provides step-by-step explanations, adapts difficulty based on student performance, and gives professors analytics on where their class is struggling. Currently live in 15 universities across the UK. As a junior developer, you'll work on the LLM-powered features: improving problem generation quality for STEM subjects, building the adaptive difficulty engine, and creating the explanation pipeline that makes AI-generated solutions actually educational (not just correct). Our team is 9 people — 4 engineers, 2 educators, and 3 in product. You'll get real ownership quickly and direct feedback from professors and students on whether your features actually help people learn.

Responsibilities

  • Build LLM-powered problem generation pipelines for STEM subjects
  • Develop the adaptive difficulty engine based on student performance data
  • Create explanation pipelines that are educational, not just correct
  • Write API endpoints and integration tests for new features
  • Gather and analyze feedback from university partners

Requirements

  • Python proficiency with web framework experience (FastAPI preferred)
  • Familiarity with OpenAI API or LLM tools
  • Basic SQL skills for student performance data analysis
  • Interest in education technology and learning science
  • Strong problem-solving skills and clean coding habits
