AI Energy Consumption Anomaly Detection Engineer

Ethan Park

Full-time · Job · Chicago

About the role

Industrial equipment consumes energy in characteristic patterns: a compressor has a specific power draw at full load, a conveyor system has a predictable ramp-up signature, and a CNC machine has an identifiable energy envelope for a given part program. Deviations from those patterns — a motor drawing 15% more current than its historical baseline, a system running continuously that normally cycles — are early warning signals of mechanical degradation, efficiency loss, or unauthorized equipment operation that surface weeks before failure or the next scheduled maintenance window. We build industrial IoT intelligence systems for 30 manufacturing facilities. Energy anomaly detection is one of our most requested new capabilities: facilities managers who receive a monthly energy bill can't trace abnormal consumption to specific equipment without the anomaly detection layer that pinpoints where and when the deviation occurred. You'll build the energy consumption anomaly detection system: engineering time-series features from equipment-level power monitoring data, training anomaly models that distinguish real deviations from normal operating variation, and building the alert system that surfaces actionable anomalies to maintenance teams rather than flooding them with noise.

Responsibilities

  • Engineer time-series features from equipment-level power monitoring: load cycles, demand spikes, baseline drift
  • Train anomaly detection models distinguishing real equipment deviations from normal operational variation
  • Develop equipment-specific baseline models handling seasonal load patterns and production schedule variation
  • Build alert prioritization ranking anomalies by energy waste magnitude and failure probability correlation
  • Create energy waste quantification estimating excess consumption cost for flagged anomalies
  • Monitor alert precision tracking the rate at which flagged anomalies are confirmed as real issues by maintenance teams

Requirements

  • 3+ years in industrial data science, time-series analytics, or IoT data engineering
  • Strong Python, SQL, and scikit-learn skills with anomaly detection and time-series modeling
  • Understanding of industrial equipment energy profiles, fault signatures, and predictive maintenance concepts
  • Experience building alerting systems that balance sensitivity against alert fatigue
  • Ability to work with facilities engineers on operational context and anomaly validation

Benefits

  • Fully remote with flexible schedule
  • Health and dental insurance
  • $2,500 annual professional development budget
  • 401(k) with match
  • Performance bonus tied to client energy savings outcomes
