AI Engineer — Autonomous Mining Systems

Claire Dupont

Contract · Mid-level · Perth

About the role

We are a mining technology company based in Perth, Western Australia. We develop and deploy autonomous haulage and drill-and-blast optimisation systems for open-cut mining operations across Australia and Southeast Asia. Our systems operate in environments where a misjudgement by an autonomous vehicle costs millions of dollars in equipment and has the potential to injure or kill people. We are not casual about this. Our engineering process is structured, our testing protocols are thorough, and we do not ship autonomous systems faster than we can validate them. We are also a growing company — we have been operating for eleven years, we have 34 active mine site deployments, and we are expanding our AI capabilities team to handle the volume of work our pipeline requires. This contract role sits within the perception and decision-making team, which is responsible for the ML models that underpin obstacle detection, path planning heuristics, and anomaly detection in equipment telemetry. The contract is for 12 months with strong likelihood of extension. We are hiring from anywhere in Australia — the role is remote with quarterly site visits that we pay for.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and validate obstacle detection and equipment anomaly models for deployment in autonomous haulage systems
  • Contribute to the simulation-to-real validation pipeline — understanding where simulation fidelity degrades and how to close the gap
  • Implement model evaluation frameworks that quantify safety-relevant performance metrics: missed detection rates, false alarm rates, and edge case frequency
  • Participate in structured design and safety reviews with the autonomous systems engineering team
  • Document all models, training data, and evaluation methodology to the standard required for our client safety case submissions

Requirements

  • 5+ years of ML or AI engineering with experience in robotics, autonomous systems, or industrial safety-critical applications
  • PyTorch for developing and validating perception and anomaly detection models on sensor data from autonomous equipment
  • Python at a professional engineering standard — tested, documented, and reviewable code that runs in production
  • Docker for reproducible environments across our development, simulation, and deployment infrastructure
  • Kubernetes for managing inference workloads across our mine site edge computing and cloud infrastructure
  • Computer Vision: object detection and tracking in outdoor, variable-lighting environments with lidar and camera fusion inputs
  • Statistics for rigorous evaluation: understanding false positive and false negative costs in safety-critical contexts, and communicating model confidence to engineers who make deployment decisions

Benefits

  • AUD $180,000 – AUD $215,000 annualised contract rate
  • 12-month initial contract, strong likelihood of extension
  • Remote-first within Australia — quarterly site visits paid by the company including travel, accommodation, and site induction
  • Access to proprietary sensor datasets from active mine site deployments
  • Work on systems where the engineering quality bar is real and the consequences of getting it right are equally real
