AI Essay Feedback Prompt Engineer

About the role

The feedback you design will reach 50,000 secondary school students every week, and most of them will read it on a phone between classes. Maltex AI gives students instant feedback on essays, and teachers tell us the current comments are too long, too generic and sometimes too harsh. We want a contract prompt engineer for five months to rebuild how feedback is generated: rubric-aligned, specific to the student's actual sentences, encouraging without being empty. You'll write prompts, build grading-alignment tests with two former English teachers on our team, and run A/B tests on what students actually act on.

Responsibilities

  • Rewrite feedback prompts so every comment points to a specific sentence or paragraph
  • Build rubric-alignment evaluations with our teacher advisors
  • Run A/B tests measuring whether students revise their essays after feedback
  • Document a prompt style guide the in-house team can maintain

Requirements

  • Shipped prompt-driven features to real users and measured the outcome
  • Strong writing skills and a feel for tone with younger audiences
  • Experience with retrieval to ground outputs in rubrics or exemplars
  • Education or tutoring background is a strong plus
