About the role

Document processing pipelines fail in boring but expensive ways. A vendor sends a PDF with rotated pages. A claim form arrives as a photo taken in low light. An invoice has a handwritten correction over a printed total. These exceptions don't crash the system — they route to a human queue that costs $14 per exception to resolve, 800 times per day. We're building an exception handling layer that resolves 70% of these cases automatically. You'll own the classification and resolution logic: detecting why a document failed, selecting the appropriate remediation strategy, and validating that the resolved output meets quality thresholds before leaving the pipeline. The work is part ML, part systems engineering, part domain knowledge accumulation. You'll build on top of our existing document processing platform and work closely with the operations team who currently resolves exceptions manually — they're your best source of ground truth.

Fully remote.

Responsibilities

  • Build exception classification models to identify failure types in document pipelines
  • Design automated remediation strategies for the top 15 exception categories
  • Implement quality validation to verify resolved documents meet acceptance thresholds
  • Create feedback loops from manual resolutions to improve automated handling
  • Build dashboards tracking exception rates, auto-resolution rates, and cost savings
  • Partner with operations team to understand and encode resolution heuristics

Requirements

  • 3+ years building automation or document processing pipelines in Python
  • Experience with OCR tools, PDF parsing, or document AI systems
  • Strong SQL skills for analysis and metrics tracking
  • Familiarity with workflow orchestration tools like Airflow
  • Analytical approach to diagnosing failure patterns in complex systems

Benefits

  • Fully remote with flexible hours
  • Health insurance with dental and vision
  • 401(k) with company match
  • $2,500 professional development budget
  • Annual team offsite
