AI Experiment Tracking UI Backend Developer

About the role

Data scientists run hundreds of experiments per week — different hyperparameters, architectures, training data subsets, preprocessing steps — and keeping track of what was tried, what worked, and what didn't is a nightmare. Our experiment tracking platform stores every run's configuration, metrics, artifacts, and lineage in a searchable, comparable interface. As a junior developer, you'll build the backend APIs that power the experiment tracking UI: endpoints for querying runs by metric ranges, comparing multiple experiments side-by-side, grouping runs into logical experiments, and generating summary reports for team reviews. The data is already stored in MLflow; your job is building the API layer that makes it useful for the ways data scientists actually work — filtering, sorting, comparing, and annotating experiments. The developer tools team is four engineers. You'll own the API layer, working with the frontend developer who builds the comparison views and the platform engineer who manages the MLflow infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Build API endpoints for experiment querying, filtering, and comparison
  • Design experiment grouping and annotation features
  • Implement side-by-side metric comparison across multiple runs
  • Create summary report generation for team experiment reviews
  • Optimize query performance for users with thousands of tracked runs
  • Write API documentation and integration guides

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python backend development with API design
  • Familiarity with SQL for data querying and aggregation
  • Basic understanding of ML experiment workflows
  • Experience with FastAPI or similar web frameworks
  • Interest in developer tools and ML infrastructure
