About the role

Facial performance capture takes an actor's face and maps it onto a digital character — preserving every micro-expression, eye movement, and lip sync while adapting it to a character with completely different proportions. The tech works well for realistic human characters. It falls apart for stylized characters with large eyes, exaggerated features, or non-human anatomy. You'll build the landmark tracking and expression transfer models that handle these non-standard cases. That means robust face tracking that works when the character's facial structure doesn't match any human training data, expression decomposition into semantic units that transfer meaningfully, and temporal smoothing that prevents the jitter that destroys believability in sustained performance. The digital character team is six engineers. You'll own the performance transfer pipeline, working alongside the character rigging engineers who define the target character's expression range and the directors who evaluate quality on real production sequences.

Fully remote.

Responsibilities

  • Build robust face tracking for non-standard character facial structures
  • Design expression decomposition into transferable semantic units
  • Implement temporal smoothing preventing performance jitter
  • Evaluate transfer quality on stylized and non-human characters
  • Optimize pipeline for real-time preview during performance capture sessions
  • Handle edge cases: extreme expressions, partial occlusions, off-axis angles

Requirements

  • 3+ years in computer vision with facial analysis or animation
  • Experience with face tracking, landmark detection, or expression recognition
  • Strong PyTorch skills for model development
  • Understanding of facial anatomy and animation principles
  • Portfolio or publications demonstrating facial performance work

Benefits

  • Fully remote with optional LA studio access for capture sessions
  • Health and dental from day one
  • $3,500 annual equipment budget
  • Flexible hours
  • Work on character AI used in major film and game productions
