About the role

Fantasy sports platforms generate $20 billion in annual entry fees, and serious players use sophisticated models to gain edges. Our optimizer helps casual players compete — generating lineup recommendations based on player projections, salary cap constraints, ownership percentages, and correlation strategies that most players don't have the statistical background to implement. As a freelance optimizer, you'll build and maintain the projection pipeline for NFL and NBA seasons: aggregating player projections from multiple sources, adjusting for matchup-specific factors, optimizing lineups under salary cap and position constraints, and incorporating ownership projections that identify contrarian plays with tournament upside. Fantasy sports optimization is a constrained combinatorial problem with stochastic inputs. Player performance is uncertain, correlations between teammates matter, and the scoring rules create nonlinear payoff structures in tournament formats. You'll balance mathematical rigor with the practical reality that projections are always wrong — the question is how to be less wrong than the field.

Responsibilities

  • Build player projection pipelines aggregating and adjusting multiple forecast sources
  • Optimize lineups under salary cap and position constraints for daily fantasy
  • Incorporate ownership projections identifying contrarian tournament plays
  • Model player correlations for stacking strategies and game environment effects
  • Deliver weekly projection updates during NFL and NBA seasons

Requirements

  • 3+ years in data science with sports analytics or optimization experience
  • Strong Python and scikit-learn skills for projection modeling
  • SQL proficiency for player statistics databases
  • Understanding of constrained optimization and linear programming
  • Interest in sports analytics (fantasy sports experience a plus)
