AI Federated Edge Model Aggregation Engineer

Blake Goldberg

Full-time · Job · Los_Angeles

About the role

Federated learning on edge devices is straightforward in research settings. In production, it's a distributed systems problem: 50,000 devices connecting on irregular schedules, with heterogeneous hardware, wildly varying data quality and quantity per device, unreliable network connectivity, and the need to aggregate model updates without ever centralizing the raw data that generated them. Our platform deploys and updates ML models on edge devices for 25 enterprise clients — industrial sensors, medical monitoring equipment, and consumer wearables. The current update mechanism sends complete model weights from the server to every device. We want to flip this: let devices train locally on their own data and send gradient updates back to a central aggregation server, improving models with private data that never leaves the device. You'll design and build the federated aggregation system: implementing privacy-preserving aggregation protocols (secure aggregation, differential privacy mechanisms), handling the non-IID data distribution problem where different device populations have systematically different data distributions, building the participation scheduling that handles intermittently connected devices, and creating the convergence monitoring that ensures federated training is actually improving global model quality.

Responsibilities

  • Design federated aggregation protocols implementing secure aggregation and differential privacy mechanisms
  • Build non-IID handling strategies addressing systematic data distribution differences across device populations
  • Implement participation scheduling for intermittently connected edge devices
  • Develop convergence monitoring tracking global model quality improvement across federated rounds
  • Create device contribution weighting accounting for data quality and quantity variation
  • Build privacy accounting system tracking cumulative privacy budget consumption across training rounds

Requirements

  • 6+ years in ML systems with federated learning or distributed model training experience
  • Deep understanding of federated aggregation algorithms, differential privacy, and secure aggregation
  • Strong Python and PyTorch skills with distributed systems design experience
  • Familiarity with edge deployment constraints and intermittent connectivity patterns
  • Research or production experience with federated learning at scale

Benefits

  • Fully remote with flexible schedule
  • Comprehensive health benefits
  • $4,000 annual professional development budget
  • Equity participation
  • Conference and publication budget
