AI Flood Risk Property Impact Modeler

Natalie Petrov

Full-time · Job · New_York

About the role

Flood risk is one of the fastest-growing unpriced risks in residential real estate. FEMA flood maps are notoriously outdated — many were last revised in the 1980s — and don't incorporate climate-adjusted precipitation projections, upstream development that has changed drainage, or sea level rise projections for coastal properties. Properties confidently outside the 100-year floodplain on FEMA maps are routinely flooding. Homebuyers, mortgage lenders, and insurers are all making valuation decisions on data they can no longer trust. We serve real estate professionals and institutional property investors with AI-driven property analytics. Flood risk modeling is the climate risk capability we're building to sit alongside our existing valuation and market analytics. The challenge is multi-source data fusion: combining FEMA map digitization, elevation data from lidar surveys, hydrological watershed models, historical flood event records, and climate precipitation projections into property-level flood risk scores that are more accurate than any single source. You'll lead flood risk model development: designing the multi-source risk fusion architecture, training property damage models from historical insurance loss data, and building the flood scenario analysis that gives lenders and investors confidence intervals on flood loss probability at the property level.

Responsibilities

  • Design multi-source flood risk fusion combining FEMA maps, lidar elevation, watershed models, and climate projections
  • Train property damage models from historical flood insurance claims and elevation-damage function data
  • Build climate-adjusted flood frequency analysis incorporating updated precipitation return period estimates
  • Implement flood scenario analysis generating confidence intervals on annual loss probability by property
  • Develop portfolio flood concentration analytics for lenders and investors managing large property exposures
  • Validate model outputs against independent flood insurance claims and post-event damage assessments

Requirements

  • 6+ years in climate risk modeling, geospatial data science, or catastrophe modeling with flood focus
  • Deep understanding of hydrological modeling, elevation-damage functions, and flood risk assessment methodology
  • Strong Python and geospatial data skills with large-scale climate and property data processing
  • Experience with FEMA NFIP data, lidar elevation datasets, and climate precipitation projections
  • Track record building risk models adopted by real estate finance or insurance professionals

Benefits

  • Fully remote with flexible schedule
  • Comprehensive health benefits
  • $4,000 annual professional development budget
  • Equity participation
  • Bonus tied to model adoption by lender and investor clients
