About the role

Grocery retailers throw away $18.2 billion in fresh produce every year because they can't predict when items will expire. A strawberry batch from farm A in June might last 5 days; the same variety from farm B in October might last 8 days. Temperature during transit, humidity in the display case, and time since harvest all affect shelf life — but most stores use a single fixed expiration date for all units. Our shelf life predictor estimates remaining freshness for individual produce batches based on supply chain conditions: harvest date, transit temperature logs, warehouse humidity, and time on the retail display. You'll build the prediction models that turn these heterogeneous sensor readings into actionable freshness estimates that stores use for markdown timing and donation routing. This is a 9-month contract. You'll work with our food science consultant who validates predictions against actual spoilage data and our retail operations analyst who designs the markdown timing rules triggered by your predictions.

Fully remote.

Responsibilities

  • Build shelf life prediction models from supply chain sensor data
  • Integrate harvest date, transit temperature, and display case conditions
  • Design features capturing the cumulative impact of environmental exposure
  • Validate predictions against actual spoilage observations
  • Produce batch-level freshness scores for markdown and donation decisions
  • Handle missing sensor data from gaps in cold chain monitoring

Requirements

  • 3+ years in time series prediction or supply chain analytics
  • Experience with sensor data integration and environmental monitoring
  • Strong Python and statistical modeling skills
  • Comfort working with messy, incomplete real-world sensor data
  • Interest in food waste reduction and sustainability

Benefits

  • Fully remote contract position
  • Competitive monthly rate
  • Direct impact on $18B food waste problem
  • Access to rich supply chain sensor datasets
