AI Function Calling Reliability Engineer

Owen Goldberg

Full-time · Job · Los_Angeles

About the role

Have you ever wanted to build the layer that decides whether an LLM's tool call actually matches what the user asked for, rather than just hoping it does? That's this role. Roughly one in twenty function calls our platform generates has a subtly wrong argument, and our customers notice long before we do. You'll build validation and retry logic that catches malformed calls before they hit a downstream system, plus telemetry so we can see failure patterns across models. We publish internally and encourage conference submissions, and this problem is genuinely open enough to be worth writing up.

Responsibilities

  • Build validation logic for LLM-generated function call arguments
  • Design retry and fallback strategies for malformed tool calls
  • Instrument telemetry to track failure patterns across model versions

Requirements

  • 5+ years building LLM-integrated production systems
  • Deep familiarity with function calling and tool-use patterns
  • Comfortable owning a system end to end including on-call

Benefits

  • Fully remote position
  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Research time for internal write-ups
