About the role

Counting trees from space sounds trivial until you realize that cloud shadows, seasonal leaf changes, overlapping canopies, and sensor noise turn a "simple" detection task into one of the hardest problems in remote sensing. Our clients — forestry companies, carbon credit verifiers, and government agencies — need accurate tree counts across millions of hectares, and they need them monthly. We process 40TB of satellite imagery per month through our object detection pipeline. The current model achieves 78% mAP on our benchmark; we need 90% to meet contractual accuracy guarantees. The gap is mostly in dense canopy regions where individual tree crowns overlap, and in mixed-species forests where size and shape vary dramatically. You'll own the detection model end-to-end: architecture design, training data curation, model evaluation, and deployment to our inference cluster. The geospatial team is four engineers; you'll be the most senior ML person and will set the technical direction for detection across all our product verticals.

Fully remote.

  • Understanding of satellite imagery characteristics and preprocessing
  • Track record of improving model accuracy on real-world benchmarks

Benefits

  • Fully remote with flexible hours
  • 30 days PTO
  • Private health and dental insurance
  • £3,000 annual conference budget
