Grammar correction tools work well for native English speakers making typos. They work terribly for non-native speakers whose errors reflect L1 interference patterns — a German speaker confuses prepositions differently than a Japanese speaker, and generic correction models don't understand these systematic patterns. This part-time role (15-20h/week) focuses on building evaluation datasets for L1-specific grammar correction: collecting error examples organized by source language and error type, scoring model corrections against expert annotations, and analyzing where current models fail for specific language backgrounds. You'll develop expertise in computational linguistics and error analysis — understanding not just what errors people make, but why they make them based on their native language structure. This knowledge is valuable in any NLP role and deeply rewarding for anyone interested in how languages interact.

Responsibilities
