AI Grant Opportunity Matching Engineer

About the role

Academic researchers spend 15% of their time searching for grant opportunities and writing eligibility assessments. Most of that time is wasted on opportunities that don't match their profile. We've built a platform that monitors 40,000 active funding opportunities across NIH, NSF, EU Horizon, and private foundations, and we're building the matching layer that recommends the right opportunities to the right researchers. You'll join the matching team as a junior engineer, working on the features that analyze researcher profiles — publications, grant history, institutional affiliations — and rank funding opportunities by fit. The matching engine uses a combination of semantic similarity, eligibility rule checking, and collaborative filtering based on what similar researchers have successfully applied to. The team is small — three engineers and one domain expert with a background in research administration. You'll contribute to a product that genuinely saves researchers time and helps more good science get funded.

Responsibilities

  • Build features for the grant opportunity matching and ranking engine
  • Implement eligibility rule checking from grant solicitation text
  • Develop researcher profile analysis from publication and grant history data
  • Create semantic similarity pipelines comparing researcher expertise to opportunity scope
  • Write tests and maintain documentation for matching features
  • Handle data pipeline maintenance for grant opportunity monitoring

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Python development experience
  • Basic familiarity with NLP concepts or text processing
  • Comfortable working with APIs and structured/unstructured data
  • Interest in academic research, science funding, or information retrieval
  • Clean, well-documented code practices
