About the role

Our knowledge graph contains 14 million entities and 89 million edges. Complex queries that traverse 4+ hops — like "find all companies linked to this person through subsidiary chains and board memberships" — can take 30 seconds to execute. Legal due diligence analysts need answers in under 3 seconds, or they fall back to manual research. You'll optimize query performance through three approaches: learned query planning that predicts the most efficient traversal strategy, intelligent caching of frequently accessed subgraphs, and query approximation that returns 95% of results in 10% of the time by pruning low-probability paths. Each approach addresses a different class of slow queries. This is a 6-month freelance engagement. You'll work with our graph infrastructure engineer who maintains the database and our legal product team who defines which query patterns matter most for their workflow.

Responsibilities

  • Build learned query planning for efficient graph traversal strategies
  • Design intelligent caching for frequently accessed subgraphs
  • Implement query approximation pruning low-probability traversal paths
  • Benchmark optimization impact across top 50 query patterns
  • Profile query execution to identify bottlenecks
  • Document optimization strategies for knowledge transfer

Requirements

  • 3+ years with graph databases or knowledge graph systems
  • Experience with query optimization and execution profiling
  • Strong Python and data structure skills
  • Understanding of graph traversal algorithms and complexity
  • Ability to balance exact results against performance constraints
