About the role

Our mission is to make handwritten language learning exercises gradable in seconds instead of days. TensorFlow and PyTorch are the core of what we build, alongside a growing dataset of handwritten exercises from language learners in over 40 countries. This role means training and evaluating recognition models for messy, non-native handwriting — the kind that trips up off-the-shelf OCR. It's an interesting problem because the errors themselves are signal: a mislabeled letter often tells us exactly what a learner is struggling with, and your models will feed directly into how we design corrective feedback.

Fully remote.

Responsibilities

  • Train and evaluate handwriting recognition models on multilingual learner data
  • Build evaluation benchmarks that separate genuine errors from recognition noise
  • Publish internal findings on model failure modes to the research team
  • Collaborate with product on how recognition confidence should shape feedback

Requirements

  • Experience training computer vision models with TensorFlow or PyTorch
  • Comfortable reading and implementing findings from recent papers
  • Background in OCR or handwriting recognition is a strong plus
