AI Heatwave Grid Demand Forecasting Engineer

Violet Adeyemi

Freelance · Job · Sydney

About the role

Grid operators know how to forecast normal summer demand. Heatwaves are a different story: air conditioning load spikes, rooftop solar output drops in the smoke, and forecasts miss by hundreds of megawatts. Paleon Data builds climate-aware forecasting for utilities, and we're bringing in a freelancer for three months to build a heatwave-specific demand model for an Australian distribution network. You'll combine weather ensembles, historical load and solar generation, and deliver a model that our in-house team can run in production on Airflow.

Responsibilities

  • Build a peak-demand forecasting model specialized for heatwave conditions
  • Integrate ensemble weather forecasts and rooftop solar estimates
  • Backtest against the last eight summers and report error during extreme days
  • Hand over a documented Airflow pipeline running on GCP

Requirements

  • Proven experience in energy, load or time-series forecasting
  • Strong Python and statistical modelling skills
  • Comfortable working with weather and climate datasets
  • Available in Australian Eastern business hours for at least 3 hours a day

Benefits

  • Three-month freelance engagement
  • Fully remote
  • Fortnightly invoicing
  • Option to extend for additional utility clients
