AI Illegal Fishing Vessel Detection Engineer

About the role

Coastal governments lose billions of dollars a year to unlicensed fishing fleets that go dark the moment they cross into protected waters. We're looking for someone who can turn satellite SAR imagery into actual enforcement leads. You will build the computer vision pipeline that detects vessels in synthetic aperture radar imagery even under cloud cover and at night, then cross-references detections against AIS transponder gaps to flag likely dark fleet activity. This is a six-month contract with strong potential to extend, working alongside our existing satellite imagery team and directly supporting active enforcement partnerships with two national coast guards.

Responsibilities

  • Build and tune vessel detection models on SAR satellite imagery
  • Cross-reference detections against AIS transponder data to flag dark fleet activity
  • Optimize inference pipelines to run cost-effectively on AWS at fleet-wide scale
  • Work with policy partners to define detection confidence thresholds usable in enforcement
  • Document model limitations clearly for teams making real-world enforcement decisions

Requirements

  • 3+ years in computer vision, ideally with satellite or radar imagery
  • Strong PyTorch and Python skills
  • Experience deploying inference pipelines on AWS
  • Comfortable working with imbalanced, noisy real-world detection data
