AI Inference Request Batching Optimizer

Evan Ferrari

Full-time · Job · Los_Angeles

About the role

GPU inference throughput is a function of batch size: a GPU executing a batch of 32 inference requests is far more efficient than the same GPU processing 32 individual requests sequentially. The challenge is that requests arrive continuously and asynchronously from many clients, with different latency SLA requirements. Request batching — grouping incoming inference requests into optimal batches before executing them — is the serving layer optimization that makes the difference between a GPU cluster that handles 500 RPS and one that handles 2,000 RPS on the same hardware. Our inference serving platform handles 140 million API calls per month across 280 enterprise model endpoints. Batching optimization is one of the highest-ROI infrastructure improvements available to us: better batching directly improves throughput, which either reduces GPU costs at current load or increases the load the current fleet can absorb. Current batching is fixed-window: we wait up to 20ms and batch whatever arrives. Learned batching strategies adapt to the request arrival rate and latency tolerance of each endpoint dynamically. You'll lead batching optimizer development: building adaptive batch size selection based on real-time arrival rate and latency budget signals, implementing per-endpoint batching policies learned from historical traffic patterns, and creating the batching strategy evaluation framework that measures throughput gains against latency SLA compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Design adaptive batch size selection based on real-time request arrival rate and per-request latency budgets
  • Implement per-endpoint batching policies learned from historical traffic patterns and SLA requirements
  • Build dynamic batching window control balancing batch assembly time against tail latency
  • Develop batching strategy evaluation measuring throughput-latency Pareto improvement against fixed-window baseline
  • Create batching simulation framework for testing policy changes against production traffic replay
  • Monitor GPU utilization and p99 latency as primary optimization target metrics

Requirements

  • 6+ years in ML infrastructure or systems engineering with inference serving optimization experience
  • Deep understanding of GPU batching dynamics, CUDA execution, and inference serving framework internals
  • Strong Python skills with TensorRT, Triton Inference Server, or similar inference stack experience
  • Experience with adaptive systems that learn optimal parameters from streaming operational feedback
  • Track record demonstrating GPU utilization or throughput improvements through inference optimization

Benefits

  • Fully remote with flexible schedule
  • Comprehensive health benefits
  • $4,000 annual professional development budget
  • Equity participation
  • Performance bonus tied to GPU utilization improvement metrics
