About the role

Enterprises receive 50,000 inbound documents per month — invoices, contracts, compliance filings, customer correspondence, internal memos — and each one needs to reach the right person or system within hours. Current routing relies on email rules and shared inboxes that misroute 15% of documents, causing delays that cost real money when a time-sensitive contract sits in the wrong inbox for 3 days. Our intelligent routing engine classifies documents by type and urgency, extracts key metadata (sender, reference numbers, deadlines), and routes them to the correct handler based on content analysis. You'll architect the classification and routing pipeline, designing the models that handle 200+ document types with 95% routing accuracy. This is a 10-month contract to build the routing engine from architecture through production deployment. You'll work with two junior engineers who'll implement your designs and a product manager who owns the enterprise client requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Architect the document classification and routing engine for 200+ document types
  • Design multi-stage classification: type, urgency, department, handler
  • Build metadata extraction for routing-relevant fields
  • Create routing rules engine combining ML classification with business logic
  • Specify evaluation metrics and acceptance criteria for production deployment
  • Guide two junior engineers through implementation

Requirements

  • 6+ years in NLP or document processing with architecture experience
  • Experience designing multi-stage classification systems
  • Strong system design skills for production document pipelines
  • Proficiency in Python with LLM orchestration frameworks
  • Ability to create clear technical specifications and mentor junior engineers
